Top Questions Our Patients Have
Overall, going to the dentist twice a year is perfect maintenance for most people. Some individuals who are at higher risk of gum disease or cavities or have persistent problems may need to go more frequently. Low-risk individuals may only
need to schedule one visit a year. High-risk individuals may need to see their dentist every three or four months.
General and cosmetic dentists help patients maintain healthy, attractive smiles through preventive, restorative, and aesthetic care. General dentists focus on overall oral health by providing services like exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, gum disease treatment, and other routine dental care, while cosmetic dentists improve the appearance of teeth and smiles through treatments such as teeth whitening, bonding, veneers, and smile makeovers. Many dentists provide both general and cosmetic services, allowing patients to address oral health concerns and enhance the look of their smile in one place.
A regular dental check-up typically begins with a review of your health history, followed by a full exam of your teeth, gums, and tongue to check for signs of disease or other concerns. Your dentist may also take X-rays, depending on your age, symptoms, and whether previous records are available, to identify issues that may not be visible during the exam, such as decay, abscesses, cysts, impacted teeth, or jawbone problems. A panoramic X-ray may also be used to provide a broader view of your mouth and bite. After the exam, a dental hygienist or dentist will perform a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup near the gumline, polish your teeth, and floss to leave your mouth feeling fresh and clean. Before you leave, your dentist will recommend when to schedule your next visit, which is often within three to six months if your oral health is in good condition, or sooner if additional treatment is needed.
